Default transferring whole computer system and files

Can you transfer a a complete running system and all files and applications from one computer to another, so that it all works identically the same... ie 1 imac to another imac?

If so how?

Clone might work, but it would be better to just use the Migration assistant app to copy over the important files and use a clean install on the new computer.

Being as they are both the same kinds of machines, this should be a fairly easy, straightforward process. There are a number of programs on the market which are specifically tailored to do this kind of job. Two which I have personally used at one time or another are Carbon Copy Cloner and Clone X. They will create an exact image of the original disk. I've never had a problem with either of them.
