Default Target Mode vs Networking?

OK I am not very good at this part of Mac stuff.

I am trying to move all of my data from a PB G4 to a MacBook Pro. Migration is not an option because it is a G4 (no intel processor) going to a MBP ( with intel processor). I tried migration but I quickly found out that the G4 is not recognized on that setup.

I know how to start up the old G4 in Target disk mode but I am not sure that is the method I want? Maybe I just need to see the G4 HD on the desktop of the MBP

What does anyone think?

BTW, I miss this forum. I used to check in here almost everyday and learned a lot from all of you Mac users!

Target disk mode is what you want. Then launch Migration Assistant on the MBP.

You most likely will just want to import your user folder with all the documents, I don't think I would bring over any settings though.

Uhh... I think that frenchie said that it didn't work.

If you have an external HD and Carbon Copy Cloner you could backup the PB to the external, connect the external to the MBP, and migrate from there...

Thanks arkayn and AppleDoc

I have gone ahead and starting moving files one at a time via target disk mode, but without using migration.

I have moved over my address book, calendar files and iphoto, but am very leary of tackling iTunes. I have set up mail. So I am pretty proud of myself for getting this far.

The other thing I have noticed is that I think I messed up something to do with keychain because I can no longer log into apple discussions. Every time I try they send me to a page to sign up as a new user and even if I fill that out it is a "dead end". I don't know how to fix that at all.

So, my biggest issue right now are itunes ( I have a huge iTunes library with album art) and maybe this keychain thing.

Thanks for your help!!

iTunes is easy. Make sure that both machines have the same version of iTunes. Actually, it will work if the iTunes on the MB is a previous version, but it's easier if both match. Just copy the iTunes folder ( ~/Music/iTunes) from the old drive to the new. Launch iTunes. Voilà!

If you are using an alias to point to your music itself (ie; an external drive), make sure to show it the new original.v

I read a discussion over at apple discussions that said you had to go into itunes/preferences/advanced/then change the folder location to the new computer, BUT

how could you do that it you are in target disk mode on the old computer? That didn't make sense to me. You wouldn't be able to launch itunes on the old computer.

So, would this be my path if I tried your method:

PB G4 hard drive/users/house icon/music folder/itunes folder

then drag that entire itunes folder to the same location on the MBP?

Yep. I do it all the time, keeping an external, a Dell and two macs synced, all using a copy of the same iTunes folder. When iTunes launches it looks in your Music/iTunes folder, finds the library - which tells it what music is where -and plays it. Well, it doesn't know or care that 'iTunes Library', 'iTunes Library.xml' and 'iTunes Music' are copied from somewhere else. As long as the right file is in the right place...

Hey AppleDoc

Worked perfectly!

My whole itunes library is now on my MBP! You made it sound so easy compared to apple discussion forum!

So what do you think.........think itunes will now recognize my ipod touch?
I haven't tried that yet or to buy a song from itunes. Still wondering about that keychain thing...

Thank you so much!
