There's the Project Builder, which I don't like. You can also get eclipse, from www.eclipse.org, which is a nice free IDE, and is considered the de facto standard for any open source development. It has a lot of plugins which you can use to extend it, tying into JBoss or something like that. I also like IntelliJ IDEA, from www.intellij.com. If you haven't been doing much Java programming, though, I wouldn't recommend an IDE. You really only need it when your projects are composed of more than 5 classes.

I'm using Borland's JBuilder 8 on a Mac but it is a little finicky to get going.

I'd use an IDE for even a one class project as I like name completion integrated debugging etc but each to their own.

I'm quite fond of using nEdit and Ant for java projects. Keeps you sharp; no code complete etc. Syntax highlighting though, and ant keeps your projects portable (build wise).

If a plain text editor doesn't do it for you tho, the earlier suggestion on IDEA IntelliJ is a very good one. I use it at work for commercial projects, and it's integrated with ant, so I'm happy :-)
